Anthurium FAQ
Here are the answers to our most frequently asked questions…
Our 2022 Anthuriums are expertly grown into 5” pots. They are available for purchase only when: (a) vigorous root growth has advanced to the sides and/or base of their 5” pot; and (b) three or more leaves typical of the desired cross measuring approximately 3”- 6” are evidenced (not including the stem, or petiole).
Our fulfillment process involves selecting our most vigorous plants once each week to satisfy orders placed during the preceding week. Our hybrids are carefully prepared and scheduled for shipping the following week whenever possible. Of course, we notify each buyer as soon as their purchase ships.
Your patience as a valued Nurturing Nature Anthuriums customer is required, and sincerely appreciated!
‘Black Widow’ is a very special plant that currently remains “Under Development” in 2022. We’re working hard to consistently express its unique wide sinus, and unique “Spiderman” logo vein markings that contrast nicely against its darker-colored leaves.
These are the sought-after features of Dr. Block’s ideal ‘Black Widow’. The features appear to be recessive traits that may take another generation or more of to successfully breed into reliably consistent seedlings. We’re working hard to consider a 2023 release, so please be patient if you’re looking for a ‘Black Widow’… Anthuriums by DocBlock does our very best to responsibly nurture nature by carefully working with this very special plant’s challenging genetics!
Previous generations of self-pollinated ‘Black Widow’ parent plants produced many seeds, but remarkably few looked just like their “spider mom”. We’ve cross-pollinated ‘Black Widow’ with ‘Michelle’ in 2020; and released that cross in early-2022. As expected, the seedlings have grown up to display fascinating combinations representing each of their unique parents. If you were fortunate enough to have received a plant form this cross that closely resembles “Black Widow”; good for you! It is a rare and highly collectible Anthurium!
We purposefully create new looks through the “cross-pollination” of our most beautiful hybrids. Images of each of that cross’s exceptional parent plants are shown in our Online Store descriptions beneath the primary picture. As with any Anthurium cross, the resulting offspring plants are expected to display different qualities from each of their parent plants!
Although we do not ship outside of the USA, we can recommend the responsible services of Arthur Knott; an exporter who can reliably facilitate your overseas order! Details about his services are provided at www.Exoticaexportare.com and are additionally available for review on our Online Store’s website.
We develop beautiful new hybrid creations by “cross-pollinating” our exceptionally robust parent plants for breeding. Images of each of the parent plants from all crosses are shown on our Online Store’s descriptions (beneath the primary picture). As with any Anthurium hybrid “cross”, the resulting offspring plants are expected to display different qualities that are genetic contributions coming from each of their parent plants… just like people!
“F” stands for “fili”; and it refers to the generation(s) of breeding develop a given hybrid plant with certain genetic traits that the hybridizer has deemed desirable and representative of the developer’s creative vision…
The first generation of a developing hybrid is a cross between two selected parent plants, and the seedlings that result are referred to as “F1”;
The second generation’s selected parent plants are derived from the first generation’s seedlings, and that subsequent cross is referred to as “F2”;
The third generation’s selected parents to be bred will have come from the previous F2 generation’s seedlings; and so on.
Anthurium are relatively slow plants to hybridize, so each generation often represents anywhere from three to five years of effort to select, breed, and produce those traits that the breeder desires in the resulting offspring!
Single plant selections attempting to meet a customer’s specific requests are not offered. If a particular look is desired, we suggest that you wait until higher “F” numbers are available, as they will more reliably represent specific traits in the offspring seedlings of that next generation.
Using Anthurium ‘Zara’ as an example… Although there will always be some variance within seedlings derived from ‘Zara’, our developing F4 offspring have been specifically bred for that elusive true red-color trait you seek. The next-generation genetics of Anthurium ‘Zara’ explains why our evolving plant generations increasingly express this trait more consistently than other breeders’ attempts. Red colors are a transitional phase that evolves though brown and later to darker green in a fully mature leaf. Our plants typically retain a persistent red “eye” where the petiole emerges. Even with excellent penetrance of color in the seedlings, light and temperature conditions will continue to impact leaf color as the plant grows.
There are reliable images of the parent plants pictured on https://nurturingnature.com/online-store/ and several images along with detailed descriptions are clearly provided to optimally inform our buyers. Plant hybrid orders are fulfilled by selecting the healthiest plants available at the time they are ordered.
Additionally, our website provides links to the IAS Registry’s description of ‘Zara’ that will confirm the standards you would be looking for: https://www.aroidcultivars.org/aroid-cultivars/anthurium/zara
We do not sell our seeds because they represent the potential of our next generation plants!
As seedlings develop, DocBlock makes his selections based on his Master Gardener breeder’s vision of traits he deems most desirable in a next generation of seedlings. This not only includes what the plant leaves may look like, but also how easy the plant is to grow! Therefore, successive generations of decidedly (un)natural selections continue to help distinguish his plants’ strengths and helps his hybridization process most efficiently evolve.
Most notably, Dr. Block encourages his followers to advance their own breeding skills! He has set the standards, and now sincerely enjoys sharing growing tips with international audiences and volunteer favorable comments when someone successfully creates a beautiful new hybrid! Because he typically retains two full generations of genetics ahead of any plants that are released, DocBlock does not regard this as a commercial challenge or threatening to his commercial interests.
